Trump and his MAGA allies claim free speech when they lie to voters and threaten their political enemies—and then they want to silence their critics.
Recent news is exposing the hypocrisy of GOP free speech, to avoid accountability for spreading lies that encourage violence. An appeals court rejected Trump's argument that he is immune from legal accountability for inciting the violence on January 6. A second court reinstated a gag order that prevents Trump from intimidating court personnel with lies that have resulted in multiple death threats. And despite a detailed and scathing House Ethics report, a majority of House Republicans voted against expelling George Santos for lying to voters and stealing campaign funds.
The Talented Mr. Santos
Rep. George Santos has "volunteered" to step down from his committee assignments after Kevin McCarthy was unwilling to hold him accountable for lying to voters.
With a slim five vote majority, McCarthy cut a deal with rightwing extremists in the House who embrace lies and rightwing conspiracy theories. So it came as no surprise that McCarthy has publicly defended Rep. George Santos who was elected by lying about his entire biography, religion, and even his own mother's death.
