Republican Insanity, Absolute Insanity

The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) gathering in Texas put on public display how Republican lies and conspiracy theories are a growing threat to democracy and the nation.

Texas is once again the center of the Republican fire tornado as GOP conservatives cheer Trump’s lies and conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, low vaccination rates in Republican states, and denials that the January 6 insurrection was an attack on democracy. Also in the news, Governor Greg Abbott vows to arrest Democrat lawmakers who are protesting in D.C. to stop Texas Republicans from passing voting restrictions targeting people of color. Michael Fanone, a D.C. Police Officer brutally attacked on January 6, called out Republicans with “it’s just insanity, absolute insanity.”

We now have people cheering against the common good. Courtesy, compassion, safety: these are fronts in the culture war now.

You know by now that the ten states with the highest vaccination rates all went for Biden in the 2020 election and the ten with the lowest all went for Trump. You’ve seen the map of vaccination rates by state and how hard it is to distinguish from an electoral map. You know that the biggest spikes in COVID cases per capita are happening in the states with the lowest vaccination rates . . .

In a recent interview, Trump called Jan. 6 a “love fest.” Officer Michael Fanone, who was brutally attacked at the Capitol, says, “That’s a lie. Donald Trump’s description of January 6th—pretty much every portion of that statement—is a lie."
