SCOTUS Sides Against Trump

The Jan. 6 Committee received a major victory on Wednesday as the Supreme Court rejected Trump's appeal to withhold White House records pertaining to last year's insurrection.

Donald Trump has fought to block the release of the documents to the Select Committee three times, and all three times he has lost. All of the lower-court judges who heard the case have all agreed that the Committee has the right to obtain the documents and that "Biden, as the sitting president, was the proper person to judge whether they are protected by executive privilege." In a surprise move, despite the former president appointing one third of the sitting Justices, only Clarence Thomas dissented with the majority opinion.

“The Select Committee has already begun to receive records that the former President had hoped to keep hidden. … Our work goes forward to uncover all the facts about the violence of January 6th and its causes,” says committee chair Rep. Bennie G. Thompson and vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney in a joint statement.

In an 8 to 1 decision by the Supreme Court, Donald Trump's appeal to block the release of White House documents on the basis of executive privilege has been rejected. The documents include handwritten notes and call logs that could reveal who Trump communicated with on the day of the attempted insurrection.
